Roundtable

Leadership studies + RPGs

4 Feb 2022

What happens in the intersection of leadership studies and role-playing games?

Discussion topic

Leadership, gaming, play, and role-play are central to the human experience, and are each an inter- and trans-disciplinary fields of study and practice. Academics and practitioners have long studied leadership in many contexts and disciplines, tangentially employing gaming and role-play. In recent years, there has been increased interest in the study and use of role-play and gaming in many contexts and disciplines. One particularly exciting development is the emergence of scholar-practitioners who combine study and use of leadership and role-playing games (RPGs).

This Research Roundtable will bring together leadership scholar-practitioners with a specific interest in role-play/gaming, and role-play/gaming scholar-practitioners with a specific interest in leadership to talk about the exciting space where these interests intersect. Our purpose is to initiate conversation about the frontier of leadership studies + RPGs, find directions for current and future work, and forge connections among pioneers in the space.

We will inquire about questions such as:

  • What is the frontier of leadership studies + RPG study/practice?
  • What work are we bringing to this discourse?
  • What unique opportunities does this space open up?

We plan on using this discussion to inform a Symposium proposal to the 2022 International Leadership Association conference. Participants will be invited to contribute to such a session.

About participating

What to expect

The session will be divided into four parts: Introductions, Discussion, Review, and Wrap-up. A moderator will be on hand to deliver introductions, help keep the conversation moving, and lead the review. A notetaker will be taking notes, to which participants are welcome to contribute.

After the session, we will share a list of participants and their contact information, a transcript of the session, and the session recording. You should review the recording, and let us know if there are sections you feel should be redacted before public release. You will also be invited to help prepare the discussion summary. Finally, we will ask for your feedback on the roundtable so we can improve the experience for future participants.
